"What good is it?"

What Good is it?

One of the most common questions asked of us in this industry of alternative livestock & exotic pets is "What good is it?" This generally comes right after they ask us what kind of animals we raise.

Even if it seems like a stupid question, they felt the need to ask it. Creating confusion in their  minds is not how to expand this industry or to garner understanding from those around us. So, I have decided to put some answers in print. I know each of us has our own personal reasons for our involvement in alternative livestock and pets and this list can always be added to..

1.    I love the rural life and choose to be involved in animal husbandry

2.       Most domestic livestock is raised for slaughter. I chose alternative livestock because much of it is used for pets, exhibition, companionship or other purposes that allow it to remain alive

3.      I like raising animals that are rare or endangered. Since there is less land each day available to animals due to man's encroachment, I feel animals must either exist in captivity or face extinction. I want to feel that I am making a difference with my breeding efforts.

4.      It just plain fascinates me to be surrounded by the beauty, grace, and intelligence of many of the non-domestic species.

5.      I love the challenge of caring for and reproducing that which has become rare. Some people like raising cabbage or tomatoes. These are needed commodities. However, others choose to raise orchids and beautiful flowers. It is important that our souls be fed right along with our bellies. I am raising animals that feed the souls.

6.      Science has developed medicines from many of the rare plants in our jungles. With each plant that disappears from the face of the earth, we may lose a cure for cancer, heart disease, or other afflictions. I feel the same way about animals. We have animals that produce lean meat, are more kind to the land they live on, and are more self sufficient than domestic livestock.

7.      Farmers are constantly developing new crops for the betterment of mankind. I see myself  as a farmer of the future, helping to develop that next popular livestock or pet animal.

8.      I just plain enjoy raising the odd and unusual. I see nothing wrong with finding it fun to be different.

9.      I believe we all have something within us, pulling us back to nature. While we create all these manmade things and surround ourselves with them, a part of us chooses to reject them. Alternative livestock help us feel at one with that wild part of ourselves.

The list can go on and on. Reasons are as diversified as the people who give them. What is, or should be, important to each of us is that we can feel good about what we do. If we don't feel good about what we are doing, then we must make a change. Life is too short for us to waste any of it.

It is my wish and desire that we all become successful and happy. I believe that you can't be either successful or happy if you feel trapped in life. To succeed and be happy takes work, dedication, and enjoyment in what you are involved in. It makes no difference if you raise dogs, cows, or alternative livestock. You will only do well if both your heart and your body are involved.

What good is it? It allows me to live the great American dream. This is where my heart is.
